About East Rochester, for anyone moving there

East Rochester is a small coterminous town and village southeast of the city, one of the few places in New York where the town and village share the same borders, an arrangement adopted in 1981. The 2020 census counted 6,334 residents on 1.32 square miles. The community was laid out as a planned village named Despatch and incorporated in 1897, designed around the New York Central Railroad main line that runs through its center. It took the name East Rochester in 1906. The first big employers were the Merchants Despatch car works and the Aeolian Piano Corporation, and much of the early housing was built for their workers.

Washington Street carries Route 153 north and south as the main connector, and Fairport Road, Route 31F, crosses the village on its way to Fairport. Commercial Street is the other main thoroughfare. Irondequoit Creek runs along the eastern edge of the village. The original Aeolian piano factory buildings survive as the Piano Works Mall, a shopping center and office complex. Edmund Lyon Park, with its playground, is the village's main park, and the community also runs a senior center and a youth activity center. The village still celebrates the team that won the 1966 Senior Little League World Championship, the smallest community ever to do so.

East Rochester is a dense place. The 2000 census counted 2,916 housing units at more than 2,150 per square mile, and the population peaked at 8,347 in 1970 before settling at today's level. Most of the housing stock dates from the early decades of the village, when the railroad and piano works were hiring, so homes sit close together on short streets with small yards and, often, a second floor of bedrooms. The village describes itself as a close-knit community with small-town charm. Moving in or out here means working with narrow driveways, shared street parking and stairs, and sometimes a walk-up apartment. Compact, stackable totes are easier than boxes to carry through those tight spaces.
