About Webster, for anyone moving there

Webster is the northeastern corner of Monroe County, with Lake Ontario across its north, Irondequoit Bay and the town of Irondequoit on the west, Penfield to the south and the Wayne County towns of Ontario and Walworth to the east. It was set off from Penfield on February 6, 1840 and named for Daniel Webster after a speech he gave in Rochester in 1837 that impressed local Whig farmers. The 2020 census counted 45,327 residents on 35.22 square miles. Its motto is Where Life Is Worth Living. The village at the center, incorporated in 1905, went from a farm distribution point to a dried-apple processor with the world's largest basket factory, and the whole town began growing fast after World War II once Xerox opened its Wilson Center research facility here in 1960 and Route 104 was built.

The village of Webster sits in the middle of the town with 5,651 residents in 2020, and Town Hall is on Ridge Road, Route 104, which is the main east-west road and carries the bay bridge across to Irondequoit. West Webster is the hamlet at Ridge and Gravel Road, Union Hill is on the Wayne County line where Route 404 meets Ridge Road, Forest Lawn is the neighborhood on the lake shore in the northwest, and Fieldcrest, off Lake Road, is on the east side. Webster Park covers 550 acres of the town's Lake Ontario waterfront. Webster Central School District, with about 8,800 students, runs two high schools, Thomas, opened in 1962, and Schroeder, built in 1968, and covers the town, the village and parts of Penfield, Ontario and Walworth.

Webster's housing was built mostly from the 1950s on. The village more than doubled between 1950 and 1970 and the town's growth ran from the 1960s onward, so most homes are post-war single-family houses in subdivisions, with older streets near the village center and lakefront homes in Forest Lawn and along the shore. Moves here are almost all house to house with a garage and a driveway at each end, and a rented stack of totes suits them, filled over the two weeks and collected when the last one is unpacked.

Large residential communities in Webster include Oakmonte, a neighborhood of homes, apartments and town homes, the Summit Knolls and Phillips Village apartment communities, Avalon Estates off Phillips Road, and St. Ann's Community at Cherry Ridge, a senior campus on 41 wooded acres.
