About Irondequoit, for anyone moving there

Irondequoit is the town just north and east of Rochester's city line, with Lake Ontario to the north, Irondequoit Bay to the east and the Genesee River to the west. Water on three sides makes it a headland, and its Haudenosaunee name means where the land meets the water. The 2020 census counted 51,043 residents on about 15 square miles of land. The town was formed in 1839 when it separated from Brighton. Its northern edge became a vacation area for Rochester residents in the late 1800s and was once called the Coney Island of Western New York. Seabreeze Amusement Park, at the inlet where the bay meets the lake, opened in 1879 and is the fourth oldest operating amusement park in the country, and a railroad line from Portland Avenue in Rochester was built that same year to bring people to it. After World War II, returning veterans looking for housing drove the population from 23,376 in 1940 to 55,337 in 1960, an increase of 136 percent.

Route 104 crosses the town and carries the Irondequoit Bay Bridge over to Webster. Town Hall sits on Titus Avenue. Residents sort themselves by school district, West Irondequoit and East Irondequoit, and the west side made civil rights history in 1965 with the first fully voluntary school desegregation program in the country. Durand Eastman Park covers 977 acres along 5,000 feet of Lake Ontario shore, shared between the town and the city. Henry Durand and George Eastman offered the land in 1907 to be used as a public park forever, and the golf course was redesigned by Robert Trent Jones in 1933. Sea Breeze, with the Jack Rabbit coaster running since 1920, is the landmark at the northeast corner.

Because the town filled up in a single burst of building after the war, most of the housing is single-family homes of that era on established streets, with the lake and bay edges holding the older cottage and resort-era lots. The population has slipped a little since, with an estimated 50,380 people in 2024, so most moves are turnover of existing houses rather than new construction. Expect basements, driveways and stairs rather than elevators and loading docks. Totes that stack in a garage or on a porch and get collected two weeks later save a lot of trips to the curb with cardboard.

Irondequoit is home to St. Ann's Community on Portland Avenue, including Chapel Oaks and the Durand Senior Apartments, plus Ellen's Place on Brower Road, the Skyview Park apartments at the former Irondequoit Mall, and apartment communities such as King's Court Manor and Titus Villa.
