About Henrietta, for anyone moving there
Henrietta lies due south of Rochester, with the Genesee River as its western edge and Brighton to the north, Pittsford and Mendon to the east and Rush to the south. The 2020 census counted 47,096 residents on 35.64 square miles. It was named for Henrietta Laura Pulteney and established in 1818 when residents of East and West Henrietta separated from Pittsford. The Erie Canal opening in 1825 and the Thruway in 1954 each set off a round of growth, and the town turned from a farming community into a suburb after World War II. In 1968 the Rochester Institute of Technology moved from the city to a new campus beside the Genesee River here, and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf opened next to it the same year.
Two hamlets anchor the town. East Henrietta is at East Henrietta Road, Route 15A, and Lehigh Station Road, Route 253, and West Henrietta is at West Henrietta Road, Route 15, and Erie Station Road. The Thruway and Interstate 390 both run through the town, and a short stretch of the Erie Canal crosses the northeastern side. RIT's 1,300 acre campus enrolls about 21,000 students, 18,000 of them undergraduates, and owns four apartment complexes on campus: Global Village, Perkins Green, Riverknoll and University Commons. After I-390 was completed and Marketplace Mall was built in the 1980s, Henrietta became one of the largest retail districts in Monroe County.
Henrietta moves fall into two groups. One is the student cycle: with 21,000 people enrolled at RIT and campus apartments plus off-campus rentals around it, August and May are crowded, and most of those moves are one room's worth of belongings. The other is ordinary family moves into post-war subdivisions and newer homes on the flat former farmland between the two hamlets. A stack of rented totes is right for both, small enough for a student to carry up a stairwell and easy to fill by the dozen for a whole house, and they leave with the driver instead of going to the curb.
