About Mendon, for anyone moving there

Mendon is a town in the southeast corner of Monroe County, about 13 miles south of Rochester, with 9,095 residents at the 2020 census. It borders Pittsford to the north, Henrietta and Rush to the west, Lima and West Bloomfield to the south and Victor to the east. The town was established in 1812 from Bloomfield and joined Monroe County in 1821. Its first railroad arrived in 1853, and the Lehigh Valley Railroad completed its main line through Mendon in 1891 with three stations. The town today is made up mostly of horse farms and family homes.

The village of Honeoye Falls occupies the southwest part of town on Honeoye Creek, and the town hall itself is at 16 West Main Street in the village. The hamlet of Mendon sits at the junction of Routes 64 and 251, Mendon Center is at Route 251 and Mendon Center Road near the southeast corner of Mendon Ponds Park, and Rochester Junction is at Routes 251 and 65. Smaller named spots include Sibleyville, Dann Corner and Tomlinson Corners. The Thruway runs along the northern edge of town. Mendon Ponds Park, shared with Pittsford, is the largest park in Monroe County at more than 2,500 acres, with 21 miles of trails, kettle ponds such as the Devil's Bathtub and a National Natural Landmark designation from 1967. The highest point in the county, 1,028 feet, is in the Hopper Hills in the southeast corner. Nine properties are on the National Register, including several cobblestone farmhouses and the Mendon Presbyterian Church.

The 2010 census counted 3,138 housing units at a density of only about 79 per square mile, and the town describes itself in terms of family homes, historic houses and historic barns overseen by its own preservation commission.
