About Victor, for anyone moving there

Victor is a town in the northwest corner of Ontario County, where its western and northern lines meet Perinton and Mendon in Monroe County. It had 15,969 residents at the 2020 census, up from 7,191 in 1990, so the town more than doubled in thirty years. Long before that, the area held Ganondagan, the largest Seneca village of the seventeenth century, which French forces attacked in 1687. The town was formed in 1812 from part of Bloomfield and named for Claudius Victor Boughton, a hero of the War of 1812. Today Victor is best known for Eastview Mall, a shopping center of roughly 1.3 million square feet with 144 stores that opened in 1971 just off Thruway exit 45 on Route 96.

The New York State Thruway crosses the north of the town and I-490 meets it east of Fishers, a hamlet in the northwest corner that has its own post office and functions as a small suburb of Rochester. Route 96 runs east to west, Route 251 links the west side to Monroe County and Route 444 heads south from the village of Victor. The village itself covers 1.4 square miles at the south end of the town, was incorporated in 1879 and had 2,744 residents in 2020. Other named places include East Victor, once called Scudderville, Boughton Hill and Motts Corners. Ganondagan State Historic Site, southwest of the village, opened in 1987 and added the Seneca Art and Culture Center in 2015; its 245-acre Boughton Hill section holds a reconstructed longhouse and trails cross more than 560 acres. Dryer Road Park has athletic fields, a box rink, a playground and a multi-use trail system, and Boughton Park, Fishers Park and Harlan Fisher Park round out the parks list. Victor Central School District serves the town.

The growth figures tell the housing story. Much of Victor's housing went up during the growth since 1990, which means newer subdivisions with attached garages and driveways near Route 96 and the Thruway. The village of Victor is the exception, with a walkable Main Street and older houses on smaller lots. Employers such as Constellation Brands, Ultralife and Cognex bring in workers who need to settle nearby. Moving into a subdivision home usually means a garage to stage in and a straight path to a truck, so uniform stacking containers roll in and out quickly and leave no cardboard to break down afterwards.
