About Bloomfield, for anyone moving there

Bloomfield is the name locals use for a cluster of communities in western Ontario County, south of Rochester. The town of East Bloomfield was created with the county in 1789 as Bloomfield, then renamed after West Bloomfield split off in 1833; Victor was carved from it in 1812 as well. East Bloomfield had 3,661 residents in 2020 and West Bloomfield had 2,760. The village of Bloomfield, with 1,277 people, only dates from 1990, when the neighboring villages of Holcomb and East Bloomfield merged. The area was part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase of 1788, and East Bloomfield is the birthplace of the Northern Spy apple.

The village covers 1.4 square miles between Route 444 and the joined US 20 and Route 5, with Route 64 meeting US 20 just west of it. Fish Creek passes the north side on its way to Ganargua Creek and the Erie Canal, and Mud Creek flows north through the east of the town. The East Bloomfield Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1989, takes in 49 properties on Main, South and Park streets and Route 5, centered on the village green, with Federal, mid-nineteenth-century revival and late Victorian buildings. St. Bridget's Roman Catholic Church complex, St. Peter's Episcopal Church and the George and Addison Wheeler House are also listed. Outside the village lie the hamlets of South Bloomfield and Speakers Corners. Across the West Bloomfield line are the hamlets of West Bloomfield on US 20, Ionia near Route 64 and North Bloomfield on Route 65, where Honeoye Creek forms the border with Livingston County. The old Peanut Line railroad served the area from 1853 until service stopped in 1939.

Housing here is largely old. The historic district alone holds ninety contributing resources, and East Bloomfield reported 1,215 households at the 2000 census, most of them married couples, which speaks to settled single-family homes rather than rentals. Village houses from the 1800s come with steep stairs, small doorways and outbuildings behind the house. Beyond the village, farmhouses and orchard properties sit on long driveways off US 20 and Route 64. Moves here tend to be whole households going into or out of a period house with several floors, so containers that a single person can carry up a narrow staircase, and that stack neatly in a barn or mudroom while rooms are sorted, take much of the strain out of the job.
