About Canandaigua, for anyone moving there
Canandaigua is the county seat of Ontario County and sits at the northern end of Canandaigua Lake, the fourth largest of the Finger Lakes at 15.5 miles long. The city had 10,576 residents in 2020 and the surrounding town of Canandaigua had 11,109 more. A Seneca village stood here until the Sullivan Expedition destroyed it in 1779, and the Treaty of Canandaigua was signed in the settlement on November 11, 1794. It became a village in 1815 and a city in 1913. In 1873 the Ontario County Courthouse hosted the trial of Susan B. Anthony for voting. Canandaigua Wine Company started here in 1945 and grew into Constellation Brands, and F.F. Thompson Hospital is the region's medical center.
US 20 and Routes 5, 21 and 332 all lead into the city, and the Canandaigua Historic District covers the downtown along Main Street. At the lake end, the City Pier is lined with old boathouses, Kershaw Beach is open to the public for a small fee, and the Canandaigua Lady paddle wheeler runs cruises from May to October. Sonnenberg Gardens on Gibson Street is a 50-acre state park around an 1887 Queen Anne mansion with nine gardens laid out between 1902 and 1919. The Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum is another landmark. Finger Lakes Community College opened in 1967 just east of the city at 3325 Marvin Sands Drive, enrolls about 6,000 students, hosts the Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center, and has the 356-bed Suites at Laker Landing next to campus. The town wraps around the city and includes the hamlets of Cheshire, Academy, Centerfield, Padelford, Arsenal Hill, Four Winds Corners and Grange Landing, plus Skenoh Island in the lake.
The city had 5,559 housing units in 2020, about a tenth of them vacant, which reflects a mix of year-round homes and seasonal lake places. Downtown and the streets off Main are older two-story houses and apartments above storefronts, so expect stairs, porches and tight parking. Along the lake, moves often involve cottages and camps that open in spring and close in fall, with sloped lots down to the water. The town side has farmhouses on acreage and newer homes off Routes 5 and 20. At the start of each semester, FLCC students shift into Laker Landing and nearby rentals. Sturdy containers that stack in a car and carry down to a dock or up a narrow staircase fit all of these moves, and the two-week window covers a lake opening or a semester move-in.
