About Palmyra, for anyone moving there
Palmyra is a canal town in southwest Wayne County, about 20 miles from Rochester, with Ontario County along its southern edge. The town had 7,403 residents at the 2020 census and the village at its heart had 3,305. John Swift founded the settlement as Swift's Landing around 1789, the name changed to Palmyra in 1796, and the village was incorporated in 1827. The Erie Canal reached Palmyra in 1822, three years before it was finished, and by 1900 the village had become a railroad and industrial center. Palmyra is also the birthplace of the Latter Day Saint movement: the Book of Mormon was first printed here in 1830 at E. B. Grandin's shop, and the church built the Palmyra New York Temple in 2000 on part of the former Smith family farm.
Routes 21 and 31 cross in the village, and the corner is known for having four churches at one intersection. The Palmyra Village Historic District, listed in 2009, holds 207 contributing buildings on 82 acres along Main, Market, Church, Cuyler, Jackson and Canandaigua streets, most built between 1830 and 1890 in Federal, Greek Revival and Late Victorian styles. It has been called a quintessential canal town. Village Hall dates from 1866 to 1868. Lock 29 on the canal, built around 1914 with a 16-foot lift, and the 1857 Palmyra Aqueduct are nearby. The Book of Mormon Historic Publication Site has welcomed visitors since 1978, and the Smith log cabin was rebuilt on its original site in 1997. East Palmyra is a hamlet on County Road 225, and the town hall is at 1180 Canandaigua Road. The community library moved into the renovated Garlock Packing Company building in 2011.
Village housing leans older and is split almost evenly between owners and renters: 1,637 units in 2010, with 52 percent owner-occupied and 48 percent rented.
