About Newark, for anyone moving there

Newark is a village in Wayne County that sits in the south part of the town of Arcadia, southeast of Rochester. The 2020 census counted 9,017 residents, and the census classes almost all of them as urban. The place was settled around 1805 and grew up along the original Erie Canal, which had three locks here. The village incorporated in 1853 by absorbing two older canal settlements, Miller's Basin and Lockville. Two businesses gave Newark a name far beyond Wayne County. Jackson and Perkins, founded in 1872, became famous worldwide for its roses, and Sarah Coventry sold costume jewelry from the village until 1984.

The canal still runs through the middle of Newark, and Route 31 follows its southern bank. Main Street is Route 88, and the two routes meet near the water. Lock 28B and remnants of the older locks are part of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. The Jackson and Perkins House and the United States Post Office are both on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hoffman Clock Museum has been inside the Newark Public Library since 1954. Beyond the village line, the town of Arcadia is a landscape of drumlins and the Zurich Bog, with the hamlets of Fairville on Route 88, Marbletown near the south town line and Hydesville, known as the birthplace of modern Spiritualism because of the Fox sisters.

Newark had 4,221 housing units and 3,897 households at the 2020 census, and married couples made up about a third of those households. That points to a settled village of homes on a compact street grid rather than large new subdivisions. Many moves here are short hops between village streets, into or out of a second-floor apartment, or from a village house to a farm road out in Arcadia. Canal-era houses tend to have narrow stairs and small landings, so packing in stackable containers of a set size makes it easier to carry a load up and down without boxes giving way. Totes that arrive before packing day and leave two weeks later suit that kind of tight, local move.
