Shortsville is Manchester's neighbor, a village along Canandaigua Outlet in the town of Manchester. Delivery carries a per-mile fee past our free zone, and we quote it up front.
Older village homes and surrounding farm country.
Shortsville is a village of 1,400 people in the southwestern part of the town of Manchester, Ontario County, north of the city of Canandaigua. It packs those residents into 0.63 square miles, giving it one of the highest population densities in the county at more than 2,200 people per square mile. The village exists because of water power. In 1804 Theophilus Short built two mills on the Canandaigua Outlet, and the settlement was first called Short Mill. More mills followed his flour and saw mills, and the village incorporated in 1889.
Main Street is County Road 13, and it meets Route 21 on the west side of the village. The Thruway and Route 96 both lie about two miles to the north. The Canandaigua Outlet, the stream that drains Canandaigua Lake, runs through the village past the old mill sites. Shortsville's factories were once well known. The Empire Drill Works, founded by Hiram and Calvin Brown in 1850, ran until 1900; the Shortsville Wheel Company started in 1889 and closed early in the twentieth century; and the Papec Machine Company kept going until the 1980s. The first school opened in 1807, a district school followed in 1911 and Shortsville High School was finished by 1915. That high school site is now occupied by a building and field belonging to St. Dominic Church.
Housing in Shortsville is village housing through and through. The 2000 census counted 520 housing units and 508 households on the village's few streets, and more than half of those households were married couples. Many homes go back to the mill and factory years, and with that density lots are small and driveways short, so there is little room to leave a truck sitting for days. Neighbouring Manchester village and the countryside along Route 21 are the usual origin or destination for a local move. Containers that can be carried in through a side door and stacked in a front room keep a Shortsville move tidy on a street where space is tight.

Yes. People search for plastic moving boxes, moving bins, moving crates and reusable moving boxes, and they all mean the same thing: a sturdy 27 x 17 x 12 inch container with an attached lid that stacks and rolls. We call them totes.
