About Macedon, for anyone moving there
Macedon is an Erie Canal town in the southwest corner of Wayne County, bordered by Walworth to the north, Palmyra to the east, Farmington to the south and Perinton in Monroe County to the west. The 2020 census counted 9,270 residents, up from roughly 2,500 around the Civil War. Webb and Hannah Harwood settled here in 1789, and the town was formed from the western half of Palmyra in 1823. The canal, completed in 1825, created port communities including Wayneport and the Village of Macedon, which was centered on Lock 30 and once made grain drills at the Bickford and Huffman works. The village was incorporated in 1856 and dissolved on March 31, 2017, so it is now a hamlet within the town.
The hamlet of Macedon is in the south-central part of town where Routes 31, 31F and 350 meet. Lock 30, built around 1914 with a lift of 16.4 feet, is still in use at Canal Park beside the fire department. Remnants of the enlarged Lock 60 from 1841 lie along the canal trail off Quaker Road, and Change Bridge 39 dates from 1881. Macedon Center is in the northwest, Wayneport is in the southeast on the canal and County Road 306, and Cator Corners, Huddle, North Macedon, Yellow Mills and Walworth Station are other named places. The Gananda planned community straddles the northern line with Walworth. The Macedon Public Library keeps the Bullis Collection of local history, and schools belong to the Palmyra-Macedon and Gananda districts.
The former village and the wider town have different housing. The hamlet had 633 housing units in 2020 with three-quarters owner-occupied, many of them older canal-era houses on the streets near Route 31. Across the town the 2010 census counted 3,381 units, 78 percent owner-occupied and only 6 percent vacant, including newer subdivision homes in Gananda and along Route 350 toward Penfield. Whether the door is on a canal street or a cul-de-sac with a garage, uniform totes stack the same way in a hatchback or trailer.
