About Farmington, for anyone moving there

Farmington is a town in northern Ontario County, southeast of Rochester, covering about 39 square miles of glacial drumlins and eskers that fall from around 700 feet at the south line to 500 feet in the north. It was established in 1789 within the Phelps and Gorham Purchase, and many of its first settlers were Quakers from Massachusetts. For a long time it stayed farm country. The census counted 1,399 people in 1950, 10,381 in 1990 and 11,825 in 2010, then 14,275 in 2020, making Farmington one of the fastest-growing towns in the county over the last decade.

Two highways shape daily life. Route 332 runs north to south and Route 96 runs east to west, and the New York State Thruway passes across the town. The hamlet of Farmington lies south of the Thruway, and the other named places are Mertensia, once called West Farmington, New Salem, Hathaway Corners, Pumpkin Hook and Brownsville. Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track opened on May 23, 1962 on Route 96 about a mile south of Thruway exit 44; it is the only privately owned thoroughbred track in New York, runs races from spring to fall and added a casino-style gaming floor in 2004. The Farmington Quaker Crossroads Historic District at County Road 8 and Sheldon Road includes an 1816 Hicksite meetinghouse under restoration and an 1876 Friends meetinghouse, and it was listed on the National Register in 2007 for its ties to abolition. The town runs five parks, including Beaver Creek Park and the Mertensia Lodge. Ultrafab and Unisource are among the local employers.

Because so much of the population arrived after 1990, most Farmington housing is new by regional standards: subdivision homes with attached garages and newer development near the Route 332 and Route 96 corridors. Older farmhouses and the Quaker-era homes near the crossroads still stand on larger lots. A typical move here is a family shifting from an apartment into a first house a few minutes away, with a garage to load from and level driveways to roll across, which is exactly where wheeled dollies and rigid, same-size containers save the most time.

How tote rental works in Farmington

  1. Step 1

    We deliver.

Clean totes and dollies, stacked at your door.

  2. Step 2

    You pack and move.

Two weeks to pack, move, and unpack at your pace.

  3. Step 3

    We pick up.

Stack the empties. We grab them from the new place.

Some people call them plastic moving boxes, moving bins or moving crates. Same thing. They show up assembled, stack four high on the dolly, shrug off rain and snow, and go back to us when you are unpacked. No tape, no cardboard to break down, no trip to the store. See the full walkthrough
