About Penfield, for anyone moving there

Penfield is in eastern Monroe County, with Webster to the north, Perinton and Pittsford to the south, and Irondequoit and Brighton to the west. The town was established in 1810 by Daniel Penfield, a Revolutionary War veteran, and Irondequoit Creek powered the mills that drove its early economy. The 2020 census counted 39,438 residents on 37.88 square miles. Its landscape was shaped by glaciers, and the town calls itself the Town of Planned Progress. Its workforce is tied to the big Rochester employers, Kodak, Xerox, Bausch and Lomb, Paychex and Wegmans, so it functions as a suburb of the city rather than a job center in its own right.

Irondequoit Creek crosses the southwest corner and then forms part of the western border before emptying into Irondequoit Bay, whose center line is the town's boundary with Irondequoit. Route 441, Penfield Road, is the east-west spine: the hamlet of Penfield is on it near the western town line, Lloyd's Corners is where it meets Route 250, Panorama is at its interchange with Route 153, and East Penfield is near the eastern line. Penfield Center sits on Route 250 at Penfield Center Road, and Roseland is in the northeast corner on Plank Road. Town Hall is on Atlantic Avenue, Route 286. Ellison Park, Harris Whalen Park and Rothfuss Park are the parks people name first. Most of the town is in the Penfield Central School District, and the northern part is served by Webster Central.

Penfield's housing follows those hamlets and the roads between them, with subdivisions on former farmland around the older crossroads and wooded lots along the creek valley and the bay's eastern shore. Family moves dominate, often timed to the school year, and many homes have garages, basements and more than one floor to clear. Deliveries reach every part of the town by Route 441 or Route 250, whichever crossroads the house is nearest. A stack of totes in the garage lets a household pack a room at a time over two weeks, then hand the empties back instead of flattening boxes.
