About Pittsford, for anyone moving there

Pittsford is in the southeastern part of Monroe County, about seven miles from downtown Rochester. It was settled in 1789, formed in 1814 and named by Colonel Caleb Hopkins for his birthplace of Pittsford, Vermont. The 2020 census counted 30,617 residents on 23.4 square miles. The Erie Canal's completion in 1825 made it a shipping point for grain and produce, and the village at its center was incorporated in 1827. The town stayed agricultural until the 1950s, when it began turning into an affluent suburb, and in 1996 it adopted the Greenprint plan and became the first town in New York to save open space by buying development rights.

The village of Pittsford sits at the center of the town where Route 96, Main Street, meets Route 31, State Street. The canal cuts right through it, with Schoen Place's restored warehouses turned into shops and restaurants along the water, and the Phoenix Hotel from about 1826 marking the Four Corners. The village had 1,419 residents in 2020 on less than a square mile. Elsewhere in town, Pittsford Plaza sits on Route 31 on the west side, Cartersville on Route 96 has the canal guard gate, Lock 32 and the canal trail show off the historic double lock, and Great Embankment and Thornell Farm Park hold the athletic fields. Oak Hill Country Club has hosted the PGA Championship. Two colleges are here: Nazareth University, founded in 1924 on 150 acres with 11 residence halls and 2,401 students in fall 2024, and St. John Fisher University, founded in 1948 on 154 acres, with about 2,700 undergraduates and the Buffalo Bills' summer camp every year since 2000. Pittsford Central runs two high schools, Sutherland and Mendon.

Inside the village the houses are Victorian and Federal-style homes from the 1800s on narrow streets with the canal in the middle, so a move there means stairs, tight doorways and little room for a truck. Outside the village the housing is suburban, built from the 1950s onward on former farmland, with preserved open land in between. The two college campuses add residence hall move-ins each August and move-outs in May.
