About Rochester, for anyone moving there

Rochester is the city at the center of Monroe County, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario with the Genesee River running through the middle of it. The 2020 census counted 211,328 people, which makes it the fourth largest city in New York State. It grew up around the river's waterfalls, including the 80 foot High Falls, and the Erie Canal aqueduct completed in 1823 turned the mills there into what was called America's first boomtown. West of the river are Corn Hill, the 19th Ward, Susan B. Anthony, Dutchtown, Maplewood, Edgerton and Lyell-Otis. Charlotte, at the mouth of the Genesee on the lake, was a port and resort village annexed in 1916 and is home to Ontario Beach Park and the lighthouse. Downtown holds the Eastman School of Music, the Strong National Museum of Play and High Falls, and the city has been filling in parts of the Inner Loop expressway to reconnect older neighborhoods. Highland Park, Genesee Valley Park, Maplewood Park and Edgerton Park are the parks most residents know. The University of Rochester's River Campus sits in a bend of the river about two miles south of downtown, with Strong Memorial Hospital next to it.

Rochester's housing is older than the suburbs around it.
