Fairport and the town of Perinton are inside our free delivery zone, lift bridge and all. Village homes near the canal often have narrow stairs and no garage, and that is where stackable totes and a dolly beat a pile of cardboard.
Historic village homes, plus larger colonials and townhome communities across Perinton.
Fairport is a village on the Erie Canal in the town of Perinton, about 10 miles southeast of downtown Rochester. The 2020 census counted 5,501 residents in 1.62 square miles. The site was swampy ground until the canal arrived in the 1820s and turned it into a busy port; the railroad followed in 1853, and the village was incorporated on April 30, 1867. Nineteenth-century factories included DeLand Chemical, which made baking soda, and Cobb Preserving, a forerunner of the American Can Company. DeLand later became the Fairport Vinegar Works, home of Certo pectin. Today the village calls itself the crown jewel of the Erie Canal.
Main Street is Route 250, and Route 31F crosses the village on its way west to East Rochester and east to Macedon. The Fairport Lift Bridge carries Main Street over the canal. Built in 1913 and 1914, it crosses the water at a 32-degree angle on a 4 percent grade with no two angles alike, and it joined the National Register in 2014. Fairport Village Landing, opened in 1977, and Packett's Landing, from the early 1980s, are the two main shopping and dining spots along the water, and the annual Canal Days festival brings crowds and the Colonial Belle tour boat. Fairport Electric is the village's own utility. Schools belong to the Fairport Central School District, with Brooks Hill and Jefferson Avenue elementary schools, Johanna Perrin and Martha Brown middle schools, and Fairport High School.
The village had 2,637 housing units at the 2020 census with a 5.2 percent vacancy rate, and its website reported Fairport ranked fourth among the hottest housing markets in the country. A village that grew up around a canal and a railroad in the 1800s tends to have narrow lots and older two-story houses, and Fairport has a Historic Preservation Commission to look after them. The surrounding town of Perinton, by contrast, stayed mostly rural until the 1950s and then nearly doubled in population during the 1960s, so its subdivisions sit alongside surviving farms. A move within Fairport usually means stairs, street parking and a short walk from the truck to the door. Totes that stack flat against a wall keep a small canal-side house livable while the packing is under way.
All of it, including Fairport Village, Perinton, the Erie Canal, Main Street, Egypt, Bushnell's Basin and Turk Hill Road. Zip code 14450.

Yes. People search for plastic moving boxes, moving bins, moving crates and reusable moving boxes, and they all mean the same thing: a sturdy 27 x 17 x 12 inch container with an attached lid that stacks and rolls. We call them totes.
