About Greece, for anyone moving there

Greece is the town west of the Genesee River and northwest of Rochester, with Lake Ontario along its whole northern edge. It borders Rochester to the east, Gates to the south, and Parma and Ogden to the west. The 2020 census counted 96,926 residents. The name was chosen in 1822 in support of the Greek War of Independence. Settlement began in 1792 with William Hincher's family, the Erie Canal reached the town's southern edge by 1822, and in 1891 George Eastman opened the first Kodak plant at Mount Read Boulevard and West Ridge Road. That plant grew into Kodak Park, a 1,300 acre complex now called Eastman Business Park. Factory work pulled families in after World War II, and the population went from roughly 15,000 in 1940 to almost 50,000 by 1960.

Ridge Road, which is Route 104, runs across the middle of the town and carries most of its shopping, including the Mall at Greece Ridge, formed in 1994 when Greece Towne Mall and Long Ridge Plaza were joined. Latta Road, Route 18, crosses North Greece closer to the lake, and the Lake Ontario State Parkway runs about a mile inland from the shore. Interstate 390 runs north to south through the eastern side. Older hamlet names still in use include North Greece, West Greece, Greece Center, Barnard Crossing and Paddy Hill. South Greece, once a canal stop at Ridgeway Avenue and Elmgrove Road, is now Henpeck Park. The northern shore is a string of ponds and wetlands, with Long Pond, Cranberry Pond and Braddock Bay, where resort hotels stood in the late 1800s. The Greece Central School District teaches about 11,000 students and is the seventh largest district in the state outside New York City.

Most of Greece was farmland until the post-war boom, so a large share of its homes are single-family houses built in the decades after 1945, laid out in subdivisions between the older hamlets. A few older homes remain, including three cobblestone houses from the canal era such as the Covert-Brodie-Pollok House. Near the lake, houses sit around ponds and marsh, and the ground is low, only about 243 feet above sea level at the shore. Moves here are usually house to house, with a driveway or garage at each end and a lot of kitchen, garage and basement contents to pack.
