About Ogden, for anyone moving there

Ogden is a town in western Monroe County, with downtown Rochester about 10 miles to the east. The 2020 census counted 20,270 residents across 36.73 square miles. The land passed from Native American ownership to Phelps and Gorham, became part of Genesee County in 1802, and was split off from Parma to form its own town on January 27, 1817. The census tells the story of how it grew: the population rose 82.9 percent in the 1950s, 61.6 percent in the 1960s and 25.2 percent in the 1970s, then settled down, adding only 2.1 percent between 2010 and 2020.

The Erie Canal runs east to west across the northern part of the town and passes through the village of Spencerport, the town's main center. In the northwest corner is the hamlet of Adams Basin, a canal stop with its own post office and the Adams-Ryan House, a historic canal inn listed on the National Register in 1985. Ogden borders Parma to the north, Greece and Gates to the east, Sweden to the west, and Riga and Chili to the south. The Route 531 expressway runs just south of Spencerport, linking Route 31 with Interstate 490 near Gates, and Route 259 crosses the town north to south. Streams in the north, including Salmon Creek, Northrup Creek and Larkin Creek, drain toward Lake Ontario, while the southeast drains to the Genesee River. The town runs its own highway, parks and recreation, and public safety departments.

Because so much of Ogden was built in the three decades after 1950, the typical home outside the village is a single-family house on a suburban lot with a garage. Older farmhouses still stand along the rural roads, and canal-era buildings cluster in Spencerport and Adams Basin. The town has not grown much lately, so most moves are households trading one established home for another rather than filling new subdivisions. Garage-to-garage moves are common, and a set of stackable totes lined up in the garage is a simple way to keep a suburban house move on schedule.
