About Brockport, for anyone moving there

Brockport is a college village on the Erie Canal in the town of Sweden, at the western edge of Monroe County, with two small pieces of the village spilling into the town of Clarkson. The 2020 census counted 7,104 residents, down from 8,366 in 2010, and the median age of 22.8 tells you how much the university shapes the place. Hiel Brockway founded the settlement in 1822, and it was incorporated on April 6, 1829, as a port on the canal before the waterway was extended west to Buffalo. Dayton S. Morgan's foundry here built early mechanical reapers for Cyrus McCormick. The village markets itself as the Victorian village on the Erie Canal and as the first Trail Town on the canal.

Main Street runs north and south as Route 19 and crosses the canal in the middle of the village, continuing north six miles to Hamlin and south nine miles to Bergen. Route 31 runs east and west across the north of Sweden. The village stretch of the canal was rebuilt in 2021 with a brick walkway, a new visitor center and public art, and the Reimagine the Canals pedestrian bridge crosses there. The Main Street Historic District lines the downtown, and the Morgan-Manning House at 151 Main Street, an Italianate home from 1854, is the museum of the Western Monroe Historical Society. SUNY Brockport, founded in 1835 and part of the state system since 1948, enrolled 7,928 students in fall 2025 on a 464-acre campus. Its Golden Eagles field 23 Division III teams.

Housing in Brockport reflects the campus. The 2020 census counted 2,862 housing units with 15.2 percent vacant, and 38 percent of households were people living alone, both figures shaped by student rentals. In a village of Victorian-era housing, upstairs apartments and steep staircases are part of the picture. The town of Sweden around the village has 13,244 residents and includes the hamlet of Sweden Center on Route 19 and West Sweden in the southwest. Moves here follow the academic calendar, with whole streets changing hands at the start and end of the school year. A two-week tote rental fits neatly around move-in and move-out and means no cardboard piling up on the porch.
