About Hamlin, for anyone moving there

Hamlin is the lakeshore town in the far northwestern corner of Monroe County, the second largest town in the county by area at 44.59 square miles. Lake Ontario is its northern boundary, Orleans County its western one, and Rochester lies about 23 miles to the southeast. The 2020 census counted 8,725 residents, down slightly from 9,045 in 2010 but far above the 2,321 people who lived here in 1950. The town was formed as Union on October 11, 1852, and renamed in 1861 for Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln's first vice president. Farming has long shaped the landscape; during the Second World War, German prisoners of war housed at the state park worked on local farms.

Route 19 runs north through the town toward the lake, and Route 272 marks the Orleans County line on the west. The Lake Ontario State Parkway crosses the northern part of the town and passes right through Hamlin Beach State Park, 1,287 acres of shoreline with a sandy beach, 264 camping sites, the Yanty Creek nature trail and a bathhouse built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939. The park drew about 278,000 visitors in 2014. Along the shore are the small waterfront settlements of Troutburg, Benedict Beach, Onteo Beach, Sandy Harbor Beach and Shore Acres. Inland are North Hamlin, once called Thomasville, plus Walker on Route 260 in the southeast, Morton and Kendall Mills. The town hall is at 1658 Lake Road, and the one-room North Star schoolhouse joined the National Register in 2014.

Hamlin's population more than tripled between 1950 and 1980, then leveled off, so its housing is a mix of old farmhouses on acreage, cottages and year-round homes in the beach settlements along the lake, and houses built during the growth years of the 1960s and 1970s along the county roads. The 2000 census counted 3,503 housing units spread over 43 square miles of land, which works out to long drives between neighbors. Moving here often means a lot of outbuildings, barns and garages to clear, and lake cottages with narrow stairs and small rooms. Totes stack well in a pickup bed or a barn bay, and having them delivered to the door saves a trip to town for boxes.
