About Kendall, for anyone moving there

Kendall is a town in the northeast corner of Orleans County, on the shore of Lake Ontario and just west of Hamlin in Monroe County, with 2,617 residents at the 2020 census. The first settlers arrived around 1812, and when the Erie Canal opened in 1825 it gave the area a ready market for wheat and lumber and eased the way for more settlement. That same year the first Norwegian immigrant community in the United States was begun at the Kendall Settlement, along the lakeshore in the northeastern part of town. The land was swampy and slow to settle, and the area was called North Murray and the Black North for its bogs and forests. On April 7, 1837, about half of Murray became the new town of Kendall, named for Amos Kendall, Postmaster General under Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. The town government sums it up as building community values since 1812.

The Lake Ontario State Parkway runs along the shore across the top of the town. Route 237, the Kendall Highway, meets Route 18, the Roosevelt Highway, south of the hamlet of Kendall, and Route 272, County Line Road, marks the eastern boundary with Monroe County. Kendall hamlet on Route 237 is where the town offices sit, at 1873 Kendall Road. The other hamlets are Kendall Mills on the eastern line at Route 272, once Webster Mills; Morton on the county line, once East Kendall and Clarks Corners, which has its own post office; Troutburg on the lake at the east town line, once a lake port; Lomond Shore on the lake beside the parkway; and West Kendall to the northwest. Kendall Central Schools serve the town, and the town's Scarecrow Festival is the local fall event.

Homes in Kendall divide between the lakeshore, where Lomond Shore and Troutburg face Lake Ontario beside the parkway, and the farm roads inland, where the old Black North was drained into fields. The town's population is spread over 33 square miles with no village, so most moves are house to house along rural routes rather than within a dense center. In the 2000 census 28.4 percent of residents were under 18, so family moves are common. Shoreline homes sit between the parkway and the water, and a lakeside move often means carrying loads from the road to the house. Sturdy stackable totes that ride in a pickup and wait on a deck until the house is ready suit that kind of move.

Two weeks to pack, move, and unpack at your pace.

  3. Step 3

Some people call them plastic moving boxes, moving bins or moving crates. Same thing. They show up assembled, stack four high on the dolly, shrug off rain and snow, and go back to us when you are unpacked. No tape, no cardboard to break down, no trip to the store. See the full walkthrough
