About Holley, for anyone moving there

Holley is a village on the Erie Canal in the town of Murray, in eastern Orleans County, and part of the Rochester metropolitan area. It had 1,754 residents in the 2020 census, down from 1,811 in 2010, and the surrounding town of Murray had 4,796. The village was incorporated in 1850, having first been called Saltport, and it was renamed for Myron Holley, a commissioner of the Erie Canal. Murray itself dates to 1808, before Orleans County existed, and was later trimmed to create Sweden, Clarkson and Kendall. Holley's economy has always been tied to farming, and today the village has small shops and businesses, with the larger centers of Brockport and Albion growing on either side.

The village center is the crossing of Route 31, which runs through as West Albion Street and State Street, and Route 237, which is North and South Main Street. The whole village covers just 1.3 square miles. The two public schools, Holley Elementary and Holley Junior/Senior High, stand near each other in the northeastern part of the village. The older high school in the center of town closed in 1976 and is now considered a historic landmark. The Erie Canal runs through Murray along with Route 31, Ridge Road (Route 104) and Route 387, and Route 272 marks the eastern line with Clarkson in Monroe County. Around Holley, the town's hamlets are Hulberton east of Fancher beside the canal, Fancher at Routes 387 and 31, Brockville north of Fancher, Murray hamlet on Ridge Road, and Hindsburg on the west town line, with small McCargo Lake near the western edge.

Holley is an old canal village, so its housing is mostly older houses on the short streets around Main Street and the canal, with farm properties out in Murray. In the 2000 census, 26.5 percent of village residents were under 18 and the median age was 35, which points to young families moving in and out of modest houses.
