About Byron, for anyone moving there

Byron is a farming town on the northern border of Genesee County, northeast of the city of Batavia, with 2,302 residents at the 2020 census. It was first settled around 1807, set off from the town of Bergen in 1820 and named for the poet Lord Byron. Byron has traditionally been a rural area of dairy and vegetable farms, and it shares the Byron-Bergen Central School District with its neighbor to the east. On January 12, 1919, a New York Central train wreck at South Byron killed 22 people. The town's best-known natural feature is the Bergen-Byron Swamp, roughly 2,000 acres of protected wetland more than 10,000 years old that straddles the Byron and Bergen line. The Bergen Swamp Preservation Society formed in 1935 to protect it, and in 1964 it became the first National Natural Landmark in the country.

The hamlet of Byron, once called Byron Center, sits at the junction of Routes 237 and 262, and Route 262 runs east from Elba through it. North on Route 237 is Pumpkin Hill, also called North Byron, which took its name from a pumpkin-shaped sign at a former hotel. South on 237 is South Byron, originally Brusselville, which lies along the CSX Chicago Line, the old main line of the New York Central. Lidke's Hill in the north and Mosquito Point in the northwest round out the named places. The town government points to the Bennet Mill, the old Arrowhead Store and the Byron Museum as local landmarks, along with the Hiscock Archaeological Site, where mastodon remains and ancient artifacts continue to be unearthed.
