Red moving totes delivered to your door in Batavia. Flat package price, plus a small mileage fee we quote before you pay.
Batavia is the Genesee County seat, halfway between Rochester and Buffalo on the Thruway. It is near the outer edge of where we deliver, so mileage is a real part of the price. For larger packages it still pencils out, and we will give you the number straight.
City homes, doubles, apartments and surrounding town properties.
Batavia is a city near the center of Genesee County and the county seat, surrounded by the separate Town of Batavia. The city had 15,600 residents in the 2020 census and the town 6,293. Joseph Ellicott, land agent for the Holland Land Company, founded the village in 1802 as the base for selling off the company's 3.25 million acre purchase, and Genesee County was created the same year with Batavia as its seat. It became a village in 1823 and a city in 1915. The Erie Canal bypassed Batavia in 1825, so instead of a canal town it grew into a small industrial city in the middle of farm country, making tractors, farm implements, sprayers and shoes. Much of the heavy industry has since left, and the city's population has declined gradually since 1960.
Route 5 runs east-west through the city as Main Street and meets Routes 33, 63 and 98, and the Thruway is immediately north. Tonawanda Creek flows through downtown, and the Holland Land Office, a stone building from 1815 on West Main Street, sits beside it two blocks west of the county courthouse and the commercial center; it became a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and is now a museum. City Hall is at One Batavia City Centre, and Dwyer Stadium on Bank Street is home to the Muckdogs. Batavia Downs, which opened in 1940 as the oldest lighted harness track in the country, sits just off the Thruway, and its predecessor once rented the Genesee County Fairgrounds for racing. Genesee Community College moved to its campus on One College Road, northeast of the city in the town, in 1972, and the New York State School for the Blind is in the city. Town hamlets include Bushville on Route 5 and West Batavia on Route 33.
In 2020, 99.6 percent of residents lived in urban areas, the city had 7,450 housing units, and 7.9 percent of them were vacant. The median age was 40.9, and more than a fifth of residents were 65 or older, so moves into and out of apartments and smaller homes are routine. City blocks off Main Street have older houses close together, while the town outside is farmland. Genesee Community College is mainly a commuter school but offers housing for out-of-area students, which adds a college move-in season each fall. In a city of older two-story houses and walk-up apartments, totes that stack neatly in a hallway keep a move organized.
All of it, including downtown Batavia, Main Street, Oak Street, Ellicott Street, Route 5 and Route 98. Zip code 14020.
