About Le Roy, for anyone moving there

Le Roy, usually written LeRoy by locals, is a town in eastern Genesee County with a village of the same name at its center. The town had 7,662 residents in the 2020 census and the village 4,300. The area was first settled in 1793, the town was formed in 1812 and renamed a year later for New York merchant Herman Le Roy, and the village was incorporated in 1834. Oatka Creek flows north through the town and powered the early mills. Le Roy is best known as the birthplace of Jell-O: carpenter Pearle Bixby Wait trademarked the dessert here in 1897 and sold it in 1899 to Orator Woodward's Genesee Pure Food Company, and General Foods ran the factory until it closed in 1964. The town sits on Onondaga limestone, which forms an escarpment just north of the village and is quarried for crushed rock and cement.

The village is laid out around the crossing of Routes 5 and 19. Main Street is Route 5, leading east to Caledonia and west to Batavia, while Route 19 is Lake Street north of the crossing and Clay Street south of it. The Thruway passes north of town, and its exit 47 is where Interstate 490 begins. On East Main Street, the Le Roy House, a stucco-faced stone Greek Revival building that began as a land office, is now the Le Roy Historical Society museum, with the old Union Free School behind it housing the Jell-O Gallery. The elementary school and a small park face it across the street, in a neighborhood of large 19th century houses running down to the creek. The Oatka Festival has been held each summer since 1989. Out in the town are Fort Hill, north of the village on Route 19, and Lime Rock on Route 5 near the eastern line.

Le Roy's housing is a mix of older village houses near Main Street and the creek and farm and rural homes in the surrounding town, which counted 3,219 housing units in 2000. In the 2000 census, 17.4 percent of village residents were 65 or older, so downsizing moves out of big family houses are common here. The historic houses along East Main have two and a half stories, raised foundations and stone steps. A creek-side village with 19th century homes calls for a move done in manageable loads, and rigid totes protect what is inside on the way down an old staircase.
