About Bergen, for anyone moving there

Bergen is a town in the northeastern corner of Genesee County, bordered by Monroe County on the east and by Monroe and Orleans counties on the north, with an incorporated village of the same name on its eastern edge. The village counted 1,208 residents in the 2020 census. Samuel Lincoln settled here in 1801. The town was formed from Murray in 1813 and named for the city on the west coast of Norway. When the railroad came through in 1836, a business district called Wardville grew up where Lake Road crossed the tracks, and the village was incorporated in 1877. The town also holds Bergen Swamp, about 2,000 acres of forested wetland left by the glaciers, which in 1964 became the first site in the country designated a National Natural Landmark.

Route 19 runs through the village center as Lake Avenue, leading north to Brockport and south to Le Roy. Route 33 skirts the southern and eastern edges of the village on its way to Churchville and Rochester, and Route 262 heads west to Elba. Interstate 490 passes just southeast of the village, with an exit at Route 33A. The heart of the village is the Lake Street Historic District, 11 brick buildings on the west side of Lake Street built after fires in 1866 and 1880 led the village to ban wooden construction. They have cast iron storefronts, and the Tulley Block of 1886 serves as the village hall. The east side of Lake Street was largely torn down in urban renewal around 1970. Beyond the village are the hamlets of East Bergen on Route 19 in the northeast, Stone Church south of the village, North Bergen in the northwest and West Bergen near the western town line. The Byron-Bergen Central School District is shared with Byron.

Bergen has settled into life as a bedroom community midway between Rochester and Batavia. Village homes are mostly the houses that filled in between Wardville and the older Bergen Corners, and the upper floors of the Lake Street blocks hold offices and apartments reached by stairs. Outside the village, the town is the farms the hamlet has served since 1801, so a move here can be to a farmhouse on a rural road or a small lot in the village. In a village where the business district is a few blocks long, totes that carry easily from a car to a porch save a lot of trips.
