About Caledonia, for anyone moving there

Caledonia is a town in the northwestern corner of Livingston County, southwest of Rochester and part of the Rochester metropolitan area. It had 4,154 residents on about 44 square miles at the 2020 census, and the Genesee River helps define its eastern line. Scottish families settled the area around 1797, the town was established in 1803 as Southampton, and in 1806 the settlers renamed it Caledonia, the Latin name for Scotland. The town's best known institution is the Caledonia Fish Hatchery, built by Seth Green in 1864 at the north end of the village. It is the oldest fish hatchery in the Western Hemisphere, is still run by New York State, and was added to the National Register in 2015 along with its Queen Anne style manager's house of about 1890.

Route 5 runs east to west through the town and Route 36 runs north to south, and the two meet in the village of Caledonia. US 20 clips the southeastern corner. The village covers 2.1 square miles, incorporated in 1891 and had 2,080 residents in 2020. A creek runs north from the village to Oatka Creek at Mumford, the village's twin across the county line in Wheatland, which shares the Caledonia-Mumford Central School District and the Cal-Mum Raiders. Besides the hatchery, the Caledonia House Hotel and the Clark-Keith House are on the National Register. The town's hamlets are Baker, Maxwell, Taylor, Toggletown and Canawaugus, a former Seneca village on Route 5 in the southeast of the town.

The village had 939 housing units at the 2000 census, at about 440 per square mile, which describes a compact grid of older homes on North Street and the side streets near the hatchery, most of them with an upstairs. The rest of the town is farmland and river flats, with farmhouses and rural homes on Route 36 and the county roads. Many Caledonia moves are short ones within the village or between the village and Mumford, and others bring families out from Rochester's suburbs to a place with more land. Stacking containers that fit a hatchback and carry easily up an old front stoop suit a village house, and they stack just as well in a farm shed while a larger property is sorted room by room.

How tote rental works in Caledonia

  1. Step 1

    We deliver.

Clean totes and dollies, stacked at your door.

  2. Step 2

    You pack and move.

Two weeks to pack, move, and unpack at your pace.

  3. Step 3

    We pick up.

Stack the empties. We grab them from the new place.

Some people call them plastic moving boxes, moving bins or moving crates. Same thing. They show up assembled, stack four high on the dolly, shrug off rain and snow, and go back to us when you are unpacked. No tape, no cardboard to break down, no trip to the store. See the full walkthrough
