Chili is a town southwest of Rochester, with the Genesee River forming part of its eastern border. It was formed on February 22, 1822 when it split from the town of Riga, and the land had earlier been Seneca hunting ground. The 2020 census counted 29,123 residents spread over nearly 40 square miles, which makes it far less densely settled than the towns closer to the city. Both Interstate 490 and the New York State Thruway pass through the town, and Chili keeps a sister city relationship with Agropoli in Italy. Homer Balcom, the structural engineer of the Empire State Building, was born here in 1870.
Chili Center, where Town Hall stands on Chili Avenue, Route 33A, is the seat of town government. North Chili is the home of Roberts Wesleyan University, founded as Chili Seminary by Benjamin Titus Roberts in 1866 and renamed a university in September 2022. It enrolled 1,621 students in fall 2023 and hosts community events from soccer games and swimming lessons to fireworks and concerts. Other hamlets are South Chili, West Chili, East Chili and Clifton. Route 386, Scottsville-Chili Road, and Route 252 also cross the town. Black Creek Park, 1,505 acres of county parkland entered from Union Street south of Chili Avenue, has trails along the creek for hiking, horseback riding, skiing and snowshoeing, plus a sledding hill and two lodges. Three school districts serve the town: Gates Chili, Churchville-Chili and Wheatland-Chili.
With so much of its area still open land and parkland, Chili moves tend to involve houses on larger lots, longer driveways, and sheds or outbuildings to empty as well as the house itself. The Roberts Wesleyan campus adds a smaller, more predictable set of moves each August and May as students arrive at and leave campus housing in North Chili. Whether the job is a family house near Chili Center or a single room on campus, stackable totes pack the small stuff quickly and are collected after the two weeks, so nothing has to be stored or recycled.
Chili includes student housing at Roberts Wesleyan University in North Chili, The Village at Westwood Commons on Union Square Boulevard, and apartment communities such as Chili Gardens on Chili Avenue, Chili Paul Place on Mulcahy Boulevard, Mayflower Estates and Union Meadows in North Chili.
All of it, including Chili Center, North Chili, Clifton, Paul Road, Chili Avenue and Black Creek. Zip codes 14624, 14514, 14428.
