About Gates, for anyone moving there
Gates is the town immediately west of Rochester, between the city and the towns of Greece and Chili. It is one of the oldest towns in the county, organized in 1797 as Northampton in what was then Ontario County, renamed Gates in 1808 and incorporated on April 1, 1813 in honor of General Horatio Gates. Parts of the original town were later carved off to form the city of Rochester and the town of Greece, both of which now border it. The 2020 census counted 29,167 residents on about 15 square miles. Suburban growth came in the middle of the last century, when the population rose from 7,925 in 1950 to 26,442 in 1970.
Interstate 490 passes through the center of the town on its way into downtown Rochester, Interstate 390 curves through the eastern side as part of the outer loop, and the Route 531 freeway branches off I-490 toward Spencerport. Buffalo Road, Route 33, is the civic spine. Town Hall is at 1605 Buffalo Road, and the hamlet of Gates Center sits where Route 33 meets Howard Road. Other named places are Elmgrove, on Routes 386 and 31; North Gates, on Long Pond Road in the northeast corner; and Tressmar, on Chili Avenue, Route 33A. Wegmans Food Markets has its headquarters in the town, and Rochester Tech Park, on the site of a former Kodak manufacturing plant, houses Kodak Alaris, Pepsi Bottling Group, Citigroup and Maximus.
Housing in Gates dates mostly from that 1950 to 1970 boom, so a typical move here is out of or into a single-family house on a modest lot with a driveway and a basement. The town is compact, with expressway access from almost any street, so moving day tends to be short and local. Wegmans and the tech park bring job-related moves in and out through the year rather than in one season.
