About Avon, for anyone moving there

Avon is a town in Livingston County, south of Rochester, with 6,939 residents at the 2020 census. The Genesee River forms its western line and flows north past the village of Avon, and Conesus Creek carries the outflow of Conesus Lake into the river just west of the village. The land was bought in 1789 by Dr Timothy Hosmer, Major Isaiah Thompson, William Wadsworth and others from Hartford, Connecticut, who named the place Hartford; it became Avon in 1808. From the 1820s people came for the mineral waters and their reputed health benefits, and hotels and spas sprang up around the springs. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the village was also known for harness racing.

US 20 and Route 5 run together through the village, Route 39 meets them there, Route 15 crosses the eastern part of the town and Interstate 390 passes about two miles east of the village. The village of Avon covers 3.15 square miles and had 3,399 residents in 2020. The Avon Inn at 55 East Main Street is the only spa building still standing in the town; its main block was built in the 1840s as a Greek Revival residence, was enlarged as a sanitarium in 1882 and became an inn in 1912. Other National Register properties include the First Presbyterian Church of 1812, Hall's Opera Block, the Aaron Barber Memorial Building and the Five Arch Bridge, a railroad bridge listed in 2012. The former Erie Railroad depot is now a restaurant. The hamlets of East Avon, Ashantee, Littleville, North Avon and South Avon lie outside the village, and part of South Lima falls within the town.

The town's 41 square miles are mostly open country, so Avon housing splits between village streets and rural roads. The village has houses from the spa era and the railroad years on East and West Main Street and the side streets, most of them with a full second floor and the stairs that go with it. Out toward the river and along Route 5 and Route 20 are farmhouses on acreage and newer homes on large lots. The 2000 census counted 2,525 households in the town, more than half of them married couples, which is the profile of families moving whole houses rather than single renters. Whether the move starts on Main Street or ends on a farm road, containers that nest into a pickup or SUV and stack in a garage keep the job to a day or two.
