About Lima, for anyone moving there

Lima is a town in the northeastern corner of Livingston County, south of Rochester, with 4,154 residents on about 32 square miles at the 2020 census, or roughly 130 people per square mile. Honeoye Creek, a north-flowing tributary of the Genesee, forms the eastern town line. The village was founded in 1788 by Paul Davison and Jonathan Gould, veterans of the Sullivan Campaign, and the town was organized in 1789 as Charleston before taking the name Lima, after Old Lyme in Connecticut, in 1808. Lima's claim to fame is education. The Genesee Wesleyan Seminary opened here around 1830 as one of the first co-educational schools in the country, became Genesee College in 1849, and was closed in 1871 in favor of the newly formed Syracuse University.

The village of Lima, population 2,094, sits at the crossroads where Routes 5 and 20 meet Route 15A, about four miles east of Interstate 390. Route 5 is Avon-Lima Road on the west side and East Main Street on the east. The Lima Village Historic District covers 21 commercial, church, civic and residential properties on eight acres in the center, built between about 1845 and 1923, and it is known for Greek Revival and Italianate commercial buildings with unusually intact storefronts. In all, the village has 21 sites on the National Register, including the seminary's College Hall and the St. Rose Roman Catholic Church complex. Elim Bible Institute and College bought the old 75-acre seminary campus in 1951 and still uses its Greek Revival College Hall and Spencer Hall, with around a hundred students. Outside the village are the hamlets of North Bloomfield, South Lima, Commins Corners and Idaho. Public schools belong to the Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District, and Lima Christian School has operated since 1974.

The town counted 1,610 housing units at a density of about 50 per square mile, so most of Lima is farmland with houses spaced well apart along the state routes and county roads. In the village, homes from the seminary era line Main Street and the side streets, with the staircases and upstairs bedrooms that go with nineteenth-century construction. Students and staff at Elim come and go each term, and families move between the village and the surrounding farms or out to the Honeoye Falls side. A move into an 1850s village house or a farmhouse on Route 15A goes faster with rigid, lidded containers that can be carried two at a time and stacked in a hallway until each room is ready.

How tote rental works in Lima

  1. Step 1

    We deliver.

Clean totes and dollies, stacked at your door.

  2. Step 2

    You pack and move.

Two weeks to pack, move, and unpack at your pace.

  3. Step 3

    We pick up.

Stack the empties. We grab them from the new place.

Some people call them plastic moving boxes, moving bins or moving crates. Same thing. They show up assembled, stack four high on the dolly, shrug off rain and snow, and go back to us when you are unpacked. No tape, no cardboard to break down, no trip to the store. See the full walkthrough
