About Elba, for anyone moving there

Elba is a town on the northern border of Genesee County, directly north of Batavia, with a small village of the same name near its center. The town had 2,164 residents in the 2020 census, down from 2,370 in 2010, and the village 558. John Roraback, a weaver, settled the village site in 1804, the town was set off from Batavia in 1820, and the village incorporated in 1884. Elba calls itself the Onion Capital of the World. The town has about 2,500 acres of rich muckland soil, and Torrey Farms, one of the largest farms in New York with about 8,000 acres, is based here, along with two of the nation's top 100 farms and several family dairies. In 1948 President Truman called the place Smell-ba during a whistle-stop tour, and a federal team confirmed a year later that the muck fields do give off a distinctive smell in onion season.

Route 98 runs through the village as Main Street, north toward Albion and south to Batavia, and Route 262 crosses the southern part of the village, east to Byron and west to Oakfield. A tunnel once ran under Main Street between the inn and its owner's home, a relic of the village's days as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The village fire department runs the Onion Festival on the first weekend of August, with a Fireman's Parade, a Kiddie Parade, a car raffle and the crowning of an Onion Queen. The town's other named places are East Elba on Norton Road in the southeast corner, Five Corners on the town line south of it, Langton Corners north of the village on Oak Orchard Road, and Daws Corners on Route 98 at the south town line. The northwest corner of the town is part of the Alabama Swamp, drained by Oak Orchard Creek. The Elba Central School District serves the town.

Most of Elba is working farmland, and a move here usually means a farmhouse or a rural house on a state route with muck fields on either side. The village itself is a few streets around Main Street, with older houses on small lots. In the 2000 census 27.7 percent of residents were under 18, so family moves with children's rooms to pack are the norm. The onion harvest and festival fill August, which is also when many families try to move before school starts. Totes that seal against dust and stack in a barn or garage make sense when the new house is surrounded by fields.
