About Albion, for anyone moving there

Albion is the county seat of Orleans County, a village on the Erie Canal that lies mostly in the town of Albion and partly in the town of Gaines. The village had 5,637 residents in the 2020 census, down 419 from 2010, and the town of Albion, created in 1875 from Barre, had 7,639. In 1822 Nehemiah Ingersoll bought land where the canal would cross Oak Orchard Road and subdivided it, and the village, first called Newport, grew quickly. It was chosen as county seat in 1826, renamed Albion in 1827 and incorporated in 1828. The village grew as a trading and shipping point for a farming region whose main crops are apples, cabbages and beans, and it once had several Medina sandstone quarries. The village describes itself as twelve miles south of Lake Ontario, rich in canal history and cobblestone homes.

Route 31 runs through as East and West Avenue and meets Route 98, which is Main Street. The canal passes a short distance north of Courthouse Square, the center of the Orleans County Courthouse Historic District, about 15 acres holding 35 buildings from 1830 to 1910. The 1858 Greek Revival courthouse with its gilded dome anchors the square, along with the Swan Library and seven churches, including the First Presbyterian Church whose 175-foot spire is the tallest structure in the county, and the Pullman Memorial Universalist Church of Medina sandstone that George Pullman built in 1894. The more commercial North Main-Bank Streets Historic District runs north from there to the canal. Mount Albion Cemetery, a rural cemetery from the 1840s, sits on Route 31 east of the village. Out in the town are Albion Correctional Facility, a women's prison west of the village on Route 31, Orleans Correctional Facility, and the hamlets of Eagle Harbor Station and Riches Corners.

Albion's housing runs from the large brick and stone houses around Courthouse Square, where the district's bigger buildings give way to smaller houses at the corners, to the cobblestone homes the village advertises and the farmhouses among orchards in the town, which counted 2,847 housing units in 2010. Moving into a 19th century house near the square goes more smoothly with totes that stack on a porch and carry one at a time up a staircase.
