About Hilton, for anyone moving there

Hilton is a village in the northern part of the town of Parma, in the northwestern corner of Monroe County, about 16 miles northwest of downtown Rochester. The 2020 census counted 6,027 residents. Settlement began in 1805 when Jonathan Underwood arrived from Vermont, and the place was first called Unionville. It was incorporated in 1885 as North Parma and renamed Hilton in 1896 in honor of Reverend Charles Augustus Hilton, a former pastor of the village's Freewill Baptist Church. In March 1965 a fire destroyed more than 60 percent of the central business district, which was later rebuilt.

The village covers 1.79 square miles, all of it land. Route 18 enters from the south and leaves to the west, and Route 259 crosses the center on its way north to the Lake Ontario State Parkway. Salmon Creek, a direct tributary of Lake Ontario, flows east along the south side of the village. Hilton is the seat of the Hilton Central School District, and village offices share a building with the community center. In early October the Hilton Apple Fest fills the village for a weekend, celebrating local apple growers and the harvest with an arts and crafts show, an auto show, free admission and shuttle buses. The 2026 edition is the 44th. Hockey fans know Hilton High School as the alma mater of Olympic silver medallist Ryan Callahan.

Hilton had 2,489 housing units at the 2020 census, and married-couple households made up 46.6 percent of the total, with a rental vacancy rate of 3.1 percent. The median age was 41.2, with 24 percent of residents under 18 and 19.1 percent aged 65 or over, so households range from young families to retirees downsizing. Homes near the center are generally the older ones, with newer housing toward the village line, and the town of Parma around it stretches north to the Lake Ontario shore. Moves here run from second-floor bedrooms on older village streets to single-story homes on larger lots outside the village line. Totes that stack neatly in a hallway or garage keep either kind of move organized without a pile of cardboard.
