About Parma, for anyone moving there
Parma is a lakeshore town in northwestern Monroe County, about 16 miles from downtown Rochester. The 2020 census counted 16,217 residents, a 3.7 percent rise since 2010, on 42.98 square miles of which almost all is land. The town was established on April 8, 1808, while the area was still part of Genesee County, and was named after Parma in Italy. Growth came late. Parma had 4,049 people in 1950 and 15,633 by 2010, so most of its housing dates from the second half of the twentieth century.
Lake Ontario forms the entire northern boundary. Greece lies to the east, Ogden to the south, and Hamlin, Clarkson and Sweden to the west. The village of Hilton sits in the northern part of the town and serves as its center, with Route 259 running through it toward the Lake Ontario State Parkway and Route 18 passing through on its way west. Salmon Creek flows east across the south side of Hilton toward the lake. Parma Center and Parma Corners are the two other named places in the town. The Hilton Central School District covers most of Parma. The Hilton Apple Fest, held each October, honors the apple growers of the surrounding countryside, and two-time Olympic speed skating champion Cathy Turner is from the town.
The 2020 census counted 6,627 housing units across Parma. Outside the village of Hilton the pattern is rural roads, orchards and farm fields with houses set well back on their own lots, along with subdivisions built as the population quadrupled after 1950. That mix means moves here can be anything from a home near the lakeshore to a farmhouse on acreage to a newer house with a two-car garage. Long driveways and big garages make loading straightforward, but a spread-out house with a basement and outbuildings takes more containers than people expect. Renting a full set of totes for two weeks lets a family pack the whole property at once instead of hunting for more boxes halfway through.
