About Manchester, for anyone moving there

Manchester is a town of about 38 square miles in Ontario County, northeast of the city of Canandaigua, with 9,406 residents at the 2020 census. It was formed in 1822 from the town of Farmington. The Lehigh Valley Railroad ran a division point and car classification yard here that was at one time the largest such facility in the world; it closed on October 30, 1972. The drumlin called Cumorah, rising about 110 feet above the valley four miles south of Palmyra, is where Joseph Smith said he found the golden plates of the Book of Mormon. The church keeps a monument topped by a statue of the angel Moroni on the summit and a visitors center at its base, and the outdoor pageant held there since 1935 ended with the cancelled 2020 season.

The Thruway passes through the center of the town with an exit at 43, and Route 96 runs alongside it before meeting Route 21 in the village of Manchester. That village, settled in 1793 as the first settlement in the town, incorporated in 1892, covers 1.14 square miles and had 1,640 residents in 2020. The town also contains the villages of Shortsville and Clifton Springs. Clifton Springs, with 2,209 people, grew around sulfur springs after Dr Henry Foster set up a water cure there in 1849, and its sanitarium district is on the National Register; the hospital still keeps a wing for mineral baths. County Road 13 is the Main Street of both Clifton Springs and Shortsville. Hamlets include Manchester Center, Gypsum, Littleville and Port Gibson, the only community in the county on the Erie Canal, beside the stretch known as the Wide Waters.

Manchester is a town of three small villages surrounded by farmland, and moving here usually means one of two things. In the villages, houses sit close together on short streets near the old rail yard or the springs, and most have an upstairs to carry things to. Out in the town, farms and rural homes on Routes 21 and 96 have long driveways and outbuildings. The village of Manchester lost about four percent of its population between 2010 and 2020, so houses do change hands and get cleared out. For a village house with a full attic, or a farmhouse with a couple of barns, a set of identical containers lets a family sort a room at a time and carry the same size load down every flight.
