About Walworth, for anyone moving there

Walworth sits on the western edge of Wayne County, directly east of Penfield in Monroe County, with Ontario to the north, Marion to the east and Macedon to the south. The 2020 census counted 9,253 residents. Four brothers from Connecticut made the first settlement in 1799, and the town was organized from Ontario in 1829. The main hamlet was once called Douglas Corners after Stephen and Daniel Douglas, who built the first frame house around 1800. Orchards were a big part of the economy until a freeze in 1934 killed many of them and fruit growing declined. The town now promotes itself as the Gateway to Wayne County, minutes from Penfield, Fairport and Rochester.

Routes 350 and 441 cross in the town, and Route 286 runs parallel to 441 a little further north. Lincoln is a hamlet on County Road 201 near the western line, West Walworth is on County Road 204 and was settled around 1805 as Birch Bridge, and Huddle is in the southeast. The hamlet of Walworth is toward the eastern side. Gananda, a planned community begun in 1971 near the southern town line, spreads into Macedon and had 5,867 residents in 2020. It was meant to become a city of 90,000 people on 10,500 acres, but federal funding ended in the 1970s and about 1,500 acres were developed. The town hall is at 3600 Lorraine Drive, Ginegaw Park hosts a farmers' market, and Sherburne Park has a dog park. Schools are split among Wayne Central, Gananda Central and Penfield Central districts.

Walworth is overwhelmingly a town of owned homes. The 2010 census counted 3,486 housing units and 92 percent of occupied ones were owner-occupied, and Gananda's 2,208 units had a vacancy rate under 2 percent. Moves here tend to be from one single-family house to another, often a subdivision home with a garage in Gananda or along Routes 350 and 441, or a farmhouse on a county road. A garage makes a natural staging area, and stacked totes can wait there until the truck or trailer is ready.
