Farmhouses, village homes and lakefront properties in Pultneyville.
Williamson is a lakeshore town in northern Wayne County, bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, Sodus to the east, Marion to the south and Ontario to the west. It had 6,860 residents at the 2020 census. The town was established in 1802 and named for Charles Williamson, land agent for the Pulteney Estate; the first settler, Daniel Russell, built a log cabin at Pultneyville in 1794. Fruit growing defines the place. The town calls itself the Core of Apple Country, the Williamson Apple Blossom Festival has run every year since 1960, and a Mott's plant employs roughly 300 people. Dairy farming is part of the local economy too.
Route 104 carries east-west traffic across the town, and Route 21 runs north-south to the Thruway. The hamlet of Williamson is on Ridge Road near the center of town and is the government seat, with the town hall at 6380 Route 21. East Williamson is also on Ridge Road near the eastern line. Pultneyville, at the mouth of Salmon Creek on the lakeshore, was Wayne County's only port until the Erie Canal opened in 1823 and traded with New York, Boston and Baltimore until the 1890s. Its historic district, listed in 1985, is known for Federal, Greek Revival and Second Empire architecture, and Gates Hall from 1825 is called the second-oldest little theatre in the country. Orbaker's Drive-In, open since 1932, and the Candy Kitchen, founded in 1890, are local fixtures.
The 2010 census counted 3,121 housing units with about 80 percent owner-occupied and 11 percent vacant, a sign of seasonal and farm properties alongside year-round homes. Pultneyville is almost entirely owner-occupied, with old captains' houses and cottages on narrow lakeside lanes, while the ridge and the orchards hold farmhouses on acreage and newer homes along Route 21. A move here can mean a long farm driveway one day and a tight lakeside street the next. Totes that nest when empty take up little room in a garage or barn until pickup.
All of it, including Williamson hamlet, Pultneyville, Route 104, Ridge Road and Lake Road. Zip code 14589.
