About Sodus, for anyone moving there
Sodus is a large lakeshore town in Wayne County, midway between Rochester and Syracuse on the south shore of Lake Ontario. It covers 69.25 square miles and had 8,028 residents at the 2020 census. The name comes from Assorodus, a word meaning silvery water. The town was formed in January 1789, the British attacked Sodus Point in 1813, and a lighthouse was first built there in 1825 and replaced in 1870. Sodus is known for its rural landscape and its many apple orchards. Sodus Bay, an arm of the lake 4.4 miles long, lies partly in the town, with the rest in Huron; a rail line once carried Pennsylvania coal to ships on the bay, and the bay now has a dozen marinas, a public beach and three islands.
Routes 104, 14 and 88 cross the town. The village of Sodus, incorporated in 1917, sits near the center at the north end of Route 88, with Route 104 skirting its northern side, and had 1,667 residents in 2020. The village of Sodus Point, incorporated in 1957, occupies the point of land on the northwest edge of the bay and had 822 residents; its Customs House, the Sodus Point Light and the schooner Lotus are on the National Register. Hamlets include Alton on Route 14 near the eastern line, Wallington on Route 104, Sodus Center, Joy, Thorntons Corner and South Sodus. Beechwood State Park, a former Girl Scout camp of 288 acres on the lakeshore, has been run by the town since 2010. The Sodus Central School District has an elementary school and a combined middle and high school.
Sodus has more seasonal housing than most towns in the region. In 2010 the town had 4,158 housing units and one in five was vacant, while in Sodus Point nearly 44 percent of 754 units were empty, a pattern typical of a resort village of summer cottages. The village of Sodus is more of a year-round place, with 792 units and about 41 percent rented. So a move here might be into a bayside cottage on a narrow lane, a village apartment near Route 88, or a farmhouse among the orchards on Route 14.
