About Ontario, for anyone moving there
Ontario is a town in the northwest corner of Wayne County, east of Rochester, with Lake Ontario as its northern boundary and Monroe County along its western line. The 2020 census counted 10,446 residents. Freeman Hopkins arrived from Rhode Island in 1806, and the town was created in 1807 as Freetown from part of Williamson. Iron ore found in 1811 supported a smelting operation that lasted into the twentieth century, and the Furnaceville furnace ran from 1825 to 1887. The Lake Ontario Shore Railroad opened in 1874. In 1970 the Robert E. Ginna nuclear power plant began commercial operation on the lakeshore about 20 miles east of Rochester; it is now owned by Constellation Energy and remains one of the oldest working reactors in the country.
Route 104 crosses the town east to west and meets Route 350 at Ontario Center. The main hamlet of Ontario is just off 104, centered on the crossing of Ridge Road and Knickerbocker Road, and it holds the town offices at 1850 Ridge Road. Ontario-on-the-Lake sits by the water in the northwest corner, Lakeside is along Route 104, Furnaceville is in the east, and Union Hill straddles the western border into Monroe County. Bear Creek and Fruitland are other named places. The census-designated place around the hamlet had 2,215 people in 2020, and the whole town spans 32.5 square miles with 3,960 households at the 2010 count.
Housing here is mostly owner-occupied. The 2010 census listed 4,145 housing units in the town with 84 percent owned by their occupants and only 4.5 percent vacant, while the hamlet itself has a higher share of rentals at about 30 percent. That mix means moves range from apartments near Ridge Road to houses on lake roads and rural lots between orchards and fields. Lakeshore streets can be windy and wet in spring and fall. The furnaces and the 1874 shore railroad are long gone, but the hamlets they served are still the points people move between. Closed totes protect belongings during a lakeshore move and stack flat in an SUV or truck bed.
