Marion is a farming town in central Wayne County, roughly 20 miles east of Rochester and 50 miles west of Syracuse. It had 4,566 residents at the 2020 census across 29.25 square miles. Settlement began around 1795, and the town was created from Williamson, its neighbor to the north, in 1825 under the name Winchester before being renamed the next year for Revolutionary War general Francis Marion. The Ezra T. Phelps Farm Complex, a Greek Revival farmhouse built before 1843 with a timber-framed barn and brick smokehouse, is on the National Register and stands as an example of the town's long agricultural history.
Route 21 is the main north-south road through Marion. The hamlet of Marion sits near the center of town where Main Street, which is County Road 216, meets Buffalo Street, County Road 207. The hamlet holds the town offices and is home to Seneca Foods, a food processing and distribution company. As a census-designated place it had 1,432 people in 2020. Lower Corners and Upper Corners are older named locations in the town, and Red Creek flows through the area. Two well-known former residents are William M. Runyan, who wrote the hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness, and the astronomer William Robert Brooks.
