Plastic Moving Totes vs Cardboard Boxes: Cost and Waste

For a Rochester one-bedroom move, renting 25 plastic totes costs $169 for two weeks with delivery and pickup, while 55 cardboard boxes with tape and paper cost about $150 and take an hour to assemble and another to break down. Totes pack faster because they arrive ready, stack four high full, roll on a dolly, and shrug off rain and snow. Cardboard wins only when you need to keep the boxes afterwards.

Time

Fifty-five boxes take about an hour to fold and tape and another hour to break down. Totes arrive assembled with the lids on. Packing itself is about the same; the two hours of box handling are what you get back. Loading is faster too: full totes stack four high on the dolly, so a stack rolls to the car in one trip instead of four carries.

Waste

Fifty-five boxes is about 40 pounds of cardboard plus a roll or two of plastic tape, used once. A rented tote is used about 60 times over its life before it is retired and sold on. If you move every few years, that is the difference between a pile at the curb and nothing.

Durability

Rochester moves happen in snow, sleet and lake-effect rain. A wet cardboard box gives out at the bottom; a tote does not care. Attached lids mean nothing falls out on the stairs and nothing gets lost in the truck. Totes also stack full without crushing, which cardboard cannot do past two high.

When cardboard is the right call

If you are moving out of our area, cardboard goes with you and our totes cannot. If you are packing over months, a two-week rental is the wrong shape; buy boxes, or book the totes for the last two weeks and pack the rest in bags and suitcases. And if you have a stash of free boxes from work, use them for books and pans and rent fewer totes.
